Meet the Teacher...

Today was Ashton's last official day of summer. Bummer! All we have left is the weekend before school starts!!! One of the things on our agenda for the day was “Meet the Teacher”. For those of you who don’t have kiddos…I will give a brief explanation of what this is. I am going to do my very best to make this not sappy and emotional. I mean we have a FIRST GRADER!!! I am not sure which is harder to take, her going to kindergarten or moving to a grade with a number attached to it! Jeeeze-louise!!

Meet the Teacher: You go up the school and posted on the cafeteria windows are the class lists. For one hour you find out who your teacher is, go find your classroom, meet your teacher, find your desk, investigate your classroom, sort and label school supplies, and parents fill out important paperwork needed for the first day. There are tons of people, but it is such a great way to ease nerves and fears with mom and dad there. It also lets the kiddos get familiar with where they will be on the first day.

This morning when I told Ashton this was her last official day of summer and, did she want to go shopping with just me to get some leggings, she replied with this: “Well, Mommy, I just want today to be a day of hanging out and not going anywhere.” So that is what we did. She and Daddy went to Sonic Happy Hour to get drinks before we went to meet her teacher.

As we walked up to the cafeteria, she and Daddy were the first to spot her name on the class lists. I look over and they are “hi-fiving” so I knew that was a good sign. She was so excited to get the teacher she wanted. It was the FIRST GRADE MRS. ALLEN! She thought is was so neat that she had Mrs. Allen in Kindergarten and now she would have the other Mrs. Allen. On our way, she saw some friends from her class last year and was stopped in the hall by the principal and counselor who needed hugs from her. Then before we could go meet the new Mrs. Allen, we had to go see Mrs. Allen from Kindergarten and give her a big hug.

Once we got into the room, she was so excited to see some of the other kids in her class and get this….she is in a real, individual desk. No more tables! She also has a number assigned to her name that they use…how grown up is that?!

We had a scavenger hunt of things we needed to complete, I was so flustered (because I was sitting in a first grade classroom) that I made the mistake of listening to another parent who gave me directions that were wrong. Once I began to read the direction sheet, we had to back-track and correct our mistakes; which luckily was easy to do. I wrote names on supplies and Ashton put things in their correct places. We pre-ordered pre-packaged school supplies and if you ever have the opportunity to do this, I HIGHLY recommend it, not only from a teacher perspective but also from the parent perspective. We didn’t have to go wander around any stores looking for things and we didn’t have to lug them with us. They were sitting at Ashton’s desk waiting for us. It was so nice! We did this last year too…and I will continue as long as they have it available.

We were given Ashton’s schedule and she is kind of bummed that she has PE on Mondays so she can’t wear the outfit she chose for the first day. She quickly realized she has some new shorts outfits and new tennis shoes she can wear and her other outfit can be worn on Wednesday.

Her teacher gave us a few things to do before Monday but other than that, she is all set and ready for school. She is so excited and we are excited for her. It still hasn’t hit me that she is a first grader. We enjoyed watching her learn and grow so much last year that I know she will do the same this year. She makes us so proud!!

On our way to the school for Meet the Teacher...
Pulling off her sock and chewing on it was how Landry spent Meet the Teacher!
Ashton's very own, individual, FIRST GRADE DESK, with a number!
Our first grader with her teacher!
The bulletin board outside her classroom...so cute!

We let Ashton choose our supper tonight and she chose to have pancakes in our jammies. She insisted we all have on jammies while we ate our pancakes. So that is just what we did.
