Are You Ready for Some...SOFTBALL?!?!

After trying soccer last fall and discovering that sport wasn’t meant for her, Ashton has decided to try t-ball/softball this year. She is VERY excited!

She had her first team meeting last Saturday and her first ever practice yesterday. When she got in the car after practice was over, she told her Daddy, “I LOVE softball!”. When I asked her what her favorite part was, she responded with…”I love running around the bases and hitting the ball!”

We are hoping she may have found a team sport to enjoy since to this point, she has only really enjoyed dance and swimming which are both individual sports.

Our Softball Chick!

The Specifics…
At this age, they focus on learning the fundamental skills and basic idea of the game. So here is how it works, their coach pitches 3 balls to see if they can hit it; if not, they get 3 tries to hit off the tee. Last night at practice, each of the girls made contact with the ball from the coach pitching. Everyone plays…a normal infield and everyone else in the outfield. Everyone gets to bat, playing for a total of 50 minutes with no score being kept.

The “Gear”…
Her team is royal blue…I thought this might be a problem since they weren’t pink. In soccer, each team chooses their own color which is why most of the teams are pink. With softball, each team is assigned a color and pink is not an option. She was excited because her team is the same color as the Texas Rangers.

She and her Daddy made a trip to Target to get her equipment…it is mostly pink which makes her happy. She likes that she plays softball like her Daddy and also that I did in my younger days. She and Bobby have been practicing in the backyard catching, throwing and hitting. I can’t tell who is having more fun…Bobby or Ashton!

Enjoy the pictures of Ashton showing her “gear”...

Notice Landry decided to pay attention...doesn't her mommy dress her?

The pink batting helmet...complete with a hole in the back for her ponytail to stick through!

Stretching…
Bobby plays softball in a rec. league on Tuesday nights and he has to stretch before the games. He mainly has to stretch his hamstring and he does so with a band lying on the floor. Last night after supper while we were cleaning up, Ashton says, “I need to stretch!” So she proceeds to put her leg up on the counter and lean forward. Then she goes and starts stretching her arms. Then she is looking for a rope or band to stretch her leg like her Daddy. She let me take pictures…it was the funniest and the cutest thing! She wants to be just like her Daddy!

stretching out her arms...very important for throwing
stretching out the hamstring...just like daddy!

Practice…
Landry and I went for part of her practice last night and Landry discovered grass! She loved the way it felt on her feet and in her hand. She even tried to get it in her mouth. Yuck! Tonight while we were out in the backyard practicing, Landry hung out in her Bumbo seat kicking her feet in the grass and watching Ashton’s every move. She had her own kind of fun! She was mesmerized by the bright yellow ball and the clunk of the ball on the bat.

Fielding a grounder at practice...she looks like she's been doing this for a while!

We want Ashton to try as many things as she can so she can decide what she likes. In the process, she is learning how to be on a team, try new things-even things that may be hard for her, and it is getting her active. We have fun watching her as well! We will keep you posted on the softball season.
