So, this is year three of Ashton and me going to the Byron Nelson Golf Tourney. I initially took Ashton because she actually liked watching golf with me on TV. Now, she wouldn’t sit on the couch with me for an entire tournament, but she would come in and watch 15-20 minutes at a time, ask some questions, cheer for the golfers, and go play again. So, I figured what the heck…I’ll take her to a real tourney and see what she thinks. Well, she loved it! We didn’t stay very long the first year, maybe an hour. But, she was hooked.
Ashton loves the entire event…she loves to park at Texas Stadium and ride the big commercial bus to the Byron (about a 10 minute trip). She loves to shop in the huge pavilion (she gets a new Byron shirt every year), she loves all the people (she constantly says “Daddy look at ALL of these people at the Byron!!”), she loves to get a hot dog and lemonade for lunch and she loves to watch the golf.
The last two years we have started sitting right next to the green on Hole #2. It’s a Par 3, so she can see the guys on the tee box when they hit. She always wants to know what their names are and where they are from…she especially loves when someone is from Texas (our home) or Alabama (Mamo, Papo, and Uncle Todd’s home). Anyway…we sit there from about 10 am to lunch time at which point we get her hot dog and lemonade, then go right over a hill and sit on number 17 which is another Par 3. This one has a big pond right in front of the green. I’m sure you can guess what Ashton’s favorite part is…yep when the guys hit into the water!!! She gets the biggest kick out of this!
I think this year may have been my favorite so far. I was out of town for work on Thursday and Friday and had another trip I had to leave for Sunday evening. This of course only leaves Saturday and part of Sunday to go. Well, Saturday was out because Ashton had a play date with her friend Merran while her parents went to the Byron. I had kind of chalked up that we wouldn’t be going this year, but Ashton was so determined that we would go. So Sunday, despite a light rain, and a cold wind, we bundled up and went. She was determined not to miss her annual trek with her Daddy. I hope she’s always this excited to go, it means the world to me to get to take her and see her enjoy something that I enjoy so much.
