She has figured out that she has hands. Along with this discovery she found one that makes her VERY happy…her thumb! Yep, that’s right…..one of my children has decided she wants to be a thumb sucker. My mom is probably laughing right now…I can totally see it!
For those of you who know me, you know how much I DID NOT want my kids to be thumb suckers. I have encouraged my girls to use a pacifier. Here is why: I want to be able to monitor use of the pacifier as they get older (you can take away a pacifier but not a thumb) and I didn’t want it to mess up their teeth. We already know we will add to some orthodontist’s paycheck with Ashton one day without thumb sucking teeth.
Landry has been sucking on her hands…mainly her fist for several days. It makes the loudest noise ever and is quite funny to watch. She found her thumb by accident on Wednesday night and decided she really likes it. Since then she has had a hard time finding it again and getting it to her mouth. She will try so hard and the she gets frustrated. Anytime she gets it there, we replace it with her binky and she gets mad, spits out the binky and tries again. I feel bad for her but not bad enough to give in.
The first thumb discovery
Very happy girl!
I am wondering if this is a battle that I am not going to win…but I sure will try to keep the thumb out of her mouth.
I would love comments on how to handle the thumb-sucking if I lose my battle with a 2 and half month old.
Ashton also had an exciting night on Wednesday…she got to have a sleepover at her friends Grayson and Anna’s house. Macy came too and they had a blast! They played, ate pizza, watched a movie and slept in their sleeping bags on the living room floor. Gina said they did awesome!

She is so cute and getting so big! Adorable!
I don't know any tricks for her since she is so young, but for the thumb sucker in my classroom (yet another reason you don't want her to get hooked on that--she will take her thumb with her to 2nd grade!) I put a band-aid on his thumb to keep it out of his mouth because it is such a habit for him that he doesn't even know when he is doing it. I would think that isn't a good idea for her because she might get the band-aid off and in her mouth, but perhaps there is something else to put on it to deter her from it.
Good luck!
I remember Mom putting that stuff that tastes bad on Megan's fingers to try to get her to stop sucking it...Im not sure how old you have to be to start using that. Good luck with that....Kelsie had a boy in her class at age 9 that was still sucking his thumb! You can also try what we do at the hospital....keep a little sock or mitten on her hand to keep her thumb covered and eventually she will give up on trying to find it.
You're right I did get a chuckle over that. She looks so cute sucking that thumb. But, I totally know where you're coming from on the issue.
I am right there with Grammy! I have also chuckled at the pictures---Landry looks so darn cuddly! Why do they have to look so cute at that age when they find their thumb?! I agree with you, Erin, and for all the same reasons...but don't know any tricks. The sock over her hand sounds like the best idea...but I bet she may be too old for that trick now, too. She looks pretty smart! Can't wait for the Easter pics! Love, Mamo
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm sweet girl i have something MUCH nicer you can suck
